EWIP: Empowering Women in Politics

Empowering Women in Politics (EWIP) is a multiparty program aimed at increasing the participation and influence of women in politics in four sub-Saharan African countries namely; Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Cote d’ Ivoire. The program is an initiative of the Center Party International Center (CIS) with support from The Christian Democratic International Center (KIC). The program is being funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation (Sida). The Christian Democratic International Center (KIC) is responsible for the implementation of the program in Kenya and Uganda.

The program has two fundamental objectives:

  1. To increase and strengthen the capacity and confidence of women active in politics.
  2. To improve the management of political parties and other stake holders so that they are more receptive to the special needs of women.

KIC has planned EWIP academies for 2019 and 2020. In Kenya KIC is implementing the program in cooperation with Oslo Center, which is an independent, non-partisan democracy center with vast experience of working in Kenya. The target audience in Kenya will be Members of the County Assemblies (MCA’s) hailing from six political parties. These parties are selected based on their popular support during the 2017 election.

The EWIP program is designed to address the needs of women in politics by building upon the experience and lessons learnt from the Program for Young Politicians in Africa (PYPA) implemented by KIC, CIS and two other political parties since 2012.
