About the Program

For young people in East Africa, becoming politically active is far from self-evident. Young people often face resistance – especially from older leaders who view criticism as a threat rather than an opportunity for development.

Against this background, the Program for Young Politicians in Africa (PYPA) was launched in 2012. It is the largest party-affiliated development cooperation program in Sweden and functions as a cross-party, regional leadership program for young politicians from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The aim is to strengthen young people’s participation and influence in politics, as well as their work for democracy and human rights. Participants receive training in areas such as gender equality, human rights, and sustainable development, as well as practical skills including election campaigning, public speaking, media relations, and leadership.

For nearly thirteen years, the program has equipped young people with the tools to stand up for themselves, negotiate, and influence political processes. The results are clear: participants have run for political office, founded organizations, and even taken seats in parliament.

According to the participants themselves, PYPA has significantly strengthened their capacity as politicians. The program boosts their confidence, increases their recognition within their own parties, and often leads to higher positions or special assignments. The cross-party environment also helps shift attitudes toward political opponents, promotes tolerance, and reduces political tensions. Networking and experience-sharing are highlighted as especially valuable components.

To ensure long-term impact, KIC organizes dedicated alumni activities and emphasizes the importance of cooperation with participants’ home parties.

In implementing the program, KIC collaborates with three Swedish partners – the Centre Party International Foundation, the Olof Palme International Center, and Green Forum – as well as two local partner organizations.
