PYPA – Program for Young Politicians in Africa

A regional leadership program that empowers young politicians in Africa. Participants gain tools to drive change in democracy, gender equality, and human rights.

Getting involved in politics as a young person in East Africa is far from easy. Young people often encounter resistance – not least from older leaders who see criticism as a threat rather than an opportunity for development.

Against this background, the Program for Young Politicians in Africa (PYPA) was started in 2012. The program is the largest within party-affiliated development cooperation in Sweden and functions as a multi-party, regional leadership program for young politicians from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The aim is to strengthen young people’s participation and influence in politics, as well as their work for democracy and human rights. Participants receive training in, among other things, gender equality, human rights and sustainable development, but also in practical skills such as election campaigning, public speaking, media management and leadership.

For almost thirteen years, the program has given young people the tools to stand up for themselves, negotiate and influence. The results are clear: participants have run for political office, started organizations and even won seats in parliament.

According to the participants themselves, PYPA has had a major impact on their capacity as politicians. The program strengthens their self-confidence, increases their recognition within their own parties and often leads to them receiving higher positions or special assignments. The multi-party environment also helps to change the view of political opponents, promotes tolerance and reduces political tensions. Networking and exchange of experiences are also highlighted as particularly valuable elements.

To ensure that the results last over time, KIC organizes special alumni activities and also emphasizes the importance of cooperation with the participants' parent parties.

In the implementation, KIC collaborates with three Swedish partners - the Centre Party International Foundation, the Olof Palme International Center, the Green Forum - and two local partner organizations.
